If you're a seafaring sort, you may very well be interested in paying a little visit to the South Street Seaport Museum. This marine Mecca is located within an 11-square-block historic district alongside the East River. More specifically, confine your search to the area between South, Pearl, John, and Fulton Streets in lower Manhattan.
Visitors will recognize this revered nautical neighborhood by the cobblestone roads, a nice change from the concrete jungle that is New York City. A major highlight of the seaport is the fleet of six ships that date as far back as 1885, docked off Piers 15 and 16. The museum includes the largest fleet of historic sailing ships anywhere in the world, which is no small feat. In addition, the seaport features a large shopping promenade, numerous restaurants and specialty shops, and the renowned South Street Seaport Museum, which houses an impressive collection of maritime art and historical artifacts. Other items of interest include an actual working print shop, fashioned in the style of the eighteenth century, and a crafts center, where visitors can create and purchase their own sea trinkets. A reference library with over 20,000 volumes also serves the seaport, offering visitors a vivid history of New York as a world port. All of the attractions are affiliated with the South Street Seaport Museum.
For families, the South Street Seaport Museum also has developed an enticing Children's Center. Children who aren't amused by the seaport's many diverse attractions will no doubt find comfort in front of one of the center's multimedia and interactive displays.
