Radio City Music Hall is a landmark within a landmark. It's an archetypal example of the Art Deco style architecture and décor that is prevalent throughout Rockefeller Center. Radio City Music Hall is one of the largest indoor theaters in America and is home to the world-famous Rockettes chorus line. Designed by Donald Deskey, the 6,200-seat theater has an exterior that invokes images of Gotham City and an interior that greets visitors with a 60-foot-high foyer.
This introduction leads visitors into the equally impressive theater. The most striking feature of the theater is the design of the arch that hangs suspended above the stage. The arch represents a sun setting over the sea designed in the rounded Art Deco style that was popular when the theater opened in 1932. Visitors can learn more about Radio City Music Hall by taking a one-hour tour that begins in the lobby about every 30 minutes.
Again, the most famous feature of Radio City's stage is the Rockettes chorus line. Their annual Christmas show is a harbinger of the holiday season, and still opens to sold-out crowds.
