Get out of the concrete jungle that is New York City and visit the Bronx Zoo, a favorite of families since its opening in 1899. Of course, exhibits and animal houses have expanded since then. Today over 4,000 animals call the zoo home.
Get up close and personal with the animals. You'll be able to see them in very natural settings, unobstructed by barriers or fences. Moats keep animals safely in their space, but allow for an unrestricted view.
If you're feeling too tired to wander through the entire zoo on foot, hop on one of the monorails, cable cars, or buses traveling the park. You'll want to fit in as much as possible and it's well worth spending an entire day. Habitat highlights include "Jungle World," with its tropical environment and enough humidity to make your hair curl; "World of Darkness," featuring a wide array of nocturnal beauties; and "Wild Asia," home to creatures of the Far East.
Little ones will enjoy the Children's Zoo where they can get up close and personal with tamed animals in the petting zoo and learn about animals through interactive programs.
