Learn about the Far East without the 16-hour flight. The Asia Society offers an impressive collection of art exhibits, performances, films, lectures, seminars, and conferences dealing with Asia. The Society seeks to improve East-West relations through such means, as well as through various publications, assistance to the media, and materials and programs for students and teachers.
Those wealthy Rockefellers (in this case Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller III), who have influenced much in New York, founded the society, and contributed to the collection here in 1979 with nearly 300 works of art from more than 25 years of travels throughout Asia.
Their contribution includes bronzes, paintings, ceramics, sculpture and more, gathered from diverse Asian cultures. The pieces range in history from 2000 B.C. to the nineteenth century. Rare, beautiful and interesting objects are continually added to the already impressive collection.
