We're all concerned with money - making it, investing it, saving it and spending it. Whether you're fascinated by making money, the history of money, or money itself, the American Numismatic Society offers an educational look into just about everything you want to know about the green. Exhibits contain currency past and present, including everything from cowry shells to credit cards. You'll find some of the most ancient coins ever minted here as well as paper money that's a thousand years old. The numismatic collection is estimated at approximately 750,000 national and international coins and related objects.
With large study collections and interesting rarities, the museum's collection is rivaled by no other on the continent. The Society's cabinets are particularly strong in Ancient Greek currency, with a tremendous Hellenistic display. Other highlights include Roman Republican period issues, historical Islamic monies, Far Eastern currency, Latin American currency developed over the past 40 years, and Colonial series and Federal issue currencies of the United States.
The Society's library contains more than 100,000 items, including bound volumes, auction catalogues, pamphlets, manuscripts, and microforms. Nearly 2,000 objects are on exhibition in two public galleries. No, you won't get rich by visiting the Numismatic Society, but you will have a rich cultural experience.
